From dressing down a suit to elevating your jeans to business casual, here are four ways to style this underrated sweater

Has sophistication ever looked so snug? That’s the thought that pops into our heads every time we see a fine-knit, high-necked jumper. From roll-necks to turtlenecks, this neck-warming style of knitwear is perhaps the ideal autumn investment; at once practical and elegant.

And the perks don’t unravel after that. Fine-knit, high-neck jumpers are also endlessly versatile. You can pull one on with jeans, use one to dress down a suit or even wear one on a summer’s evening. They’re thin enough to keep you cool, thick enough to keep you warm — and refined enough to keep you on top fashionable form.

So, below, we’ve rounded up our four favourite ways to wear a fine-knit, high-neck jumper — and chosen the best to buy…

Stay warm this winter with a sweater under your suit

Christmas parties may not look the same this year, but our go-to style for seasonal soirées will forever remain the same: a tux with a roll-neck. It’s the ideal look for the festive season. And, if you can introduce these fine-knit jumpers into black tie circles, you can definitely introduce them to the office.

Of course, your office may also be shut. But, whenever lockdown lifts and the situation demands you suit up once more, we’d recommend eschewing your shirt and tie for a conservatively coloured sweater. Slip it on under your suit and you’ll immediately feel the benefits — both comfortable and sartorial.

Prepare for spring with a tonal fine-knit, high-neck jumper

A sweater’s for life — not just for winter. And, when jumpers are this fine-knit, you can wear them all-year-round. Our particular favourite way to wear a high-neck sweater is tonally; paired with chinos in a corresponding colour.

It’s a style that will see you well into springtime — and even serve you well during the colder spells of summer. Just remember to keep your colours subtle; even a faux roll-neck can be a statement piece of clothing, and you going too bright or bold will just look gaudy.

Accessorise your sweater with a co-ordinating scarf

Now this may sound like overkill. A high-neck sweater and a scarf? But it works. Fine-knit knitwear may be warming, but there’s only so much it can do to combat the cold. It’s not a chunky, Aran jumper, after all. But add a tightly knit cashmere scarf to the mix, and you’ll be snug throughout even the coldest seasons.

Our top tip here would be to opt for a similar-coloured scarf. Whether it’s tonally identical, or a deeper or lighter shade of the same colour, this will show a level of fashionable forethought — and elevate your outfit to new warming heights.

Keep things casual with a jumper and jeans

But it’s not all black tie and high-end accessories. The beauty of a fine-knit, high-neck is its versatility. Like a dress shirt, it can be worn with a suit — but, like a T-shirt, it can be worn with jeans. And, if you’re wearing the right pair of denims, this can be one of the best ways to wear such a jumper.

It’s a look that blends the practical with the sophisticated. Not only will jeans and a jumper keep you comfortable in winter weather, a fine-knit, high-neck sweater also has the ability to upgrade those jeans from weekend-wear into your smart-casual wardrobe.
