When you think of contrast collar shirts, chances are you’ll think of investment bankers in the Eighties and, more specifically, the fits that Michael Douglas wore as Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie, Wall Street: a plethora of blue shirts with white collar worn beneath girthy braces, wide-knotted ties and pinstripe suits. Since then the style has rather slipped into obscurity, but one brand is currently gaining a name for itself by reviving the contrast collar shirt. And it’s just arrived here at the Gentleman’s Journal Shop.
Fittingly born in Gordon Gekko’s stomping ground of New York City, Le Alfré is an American brand bringing a more relaxed vibe to Ivy League prep. Of course, that’s built on the foundation of the label’s contrast collar Oxford shirts, which are available in a series of seriously wearable colours with co-ordinating button cuffs and – in a departure from their Eighties counterparts – button-down white collars. However, the menswear on offer goes far beyond this, comprising sporty East Coast staples such as rugby shirts, baseball caps and T-shirts – handcrafted at some of Europe’s finest clothing workshops.
