You don’t have to be at Wimbledon to wear a white polo shirt

Not just for Centre Court

With the action on Centre Court set to start early next month, we’re set to see an awful lot of white polo shirts on our screens – or in person, if you’re lucky enough to win the ticket raffle. However, why should it only be the tennis stars at Wimbledon who have all the fun? The white polo is a superbly versatile wardrobe staple – but it’s often overlooked. Well, this summer we’re looking to change that.

Much like its long-sleeved second-cousin the white Oxford, the cotton polo is an item that will instantly bring a sporty, more casual edge to a more formal outfit such as a suit. However, the key things to get right to take it out of tennis territory are the colours you wear it with and the material you choose.

When it comes to colour, don’t wear it with anything that’s too dark – navy and black will emphasise its sporty quality. Instead, pair it with lighter, richer neutrals such as sand and cream. These will soften the brightness of the shade, but will also make your entire look feel more summery and bring those cool ‘old money’ vibes.

When it comes to materials, if you want a smarter look, opt for a fine cotton pique, which will give a sleeker look. As an alternative, a terry cloth polo is far more casual and better suited to slipping on with your shorts by the pool. Or for a quick doubles game, of course.
